Limpopo Health authorities have expressed concern about the rising number of trauma-related deaths. These are a result of motor vehicle accidents, stab wounds and gunshots amongst others.

Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba says the number of deaths has reached over 5 000, surpassing that of last year at the same period by more than 500. Ramathuba says pathologists are overwhelmed to perform post mortems due to the pandemic that has also affected health workers.

“We’ve already registered 5 091, it’s over 500 more compared to last year but we must understand that most of our healthcare workers are now reporting to be testing positive for COVID-19 and this is affecting the very same pathology section where I’ve got a number of forensic pathologists across the province who are now in isolation. We will find ourselves in a situation where families will not be able to bury their loved ones,” says Ramathuba.
