Limpopo has completed the vaccination of education sector employees.  Over 73 000 teachers and support staff received the Johnson and Johnson single-dose shot.

The number exceeds the number employees that were initially set to get the vaccine by about 4 000.

Provincial education spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, says the additional employees include cleaners and kitchen staff.

“Limpopo has managed to vaccinate 73 609 educators and support staff, thus exceeding the set target of 61 572. The target of 61 572 people was for educators, administration and support staff appointed by the Limpopo Department of Education, educators appointed by School Governing Bodies (SGB), and educators in the independent schools sector. Those vaccinated now include food handlers, janitors and support staff from independent schools.”

Health Department’s update on South Africa’s vaccination programme:

On Tuesday, the country administered more than 220 000 vaccines. This marked the first time the 200 000 mark was exceeded in a day since the vaccination drive began in South Africa.

Over 5.3 million vaccinations have been administered, while almost 1.8 million people have been fully vaccinated.

More than 1.5 million South Africans between the ages of 35 and 49 have already registered for their COVID-19 vaccination. The Department of Health says that more than a million people registered on Thursday last week alone.
