The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) says a process is under way to conduct security checks on staff including lifestyle audits in order to curb corruption and fraud.

Sassa is reportedly riddled with crime syndicates. In the latest incident, 23 suspects appeared in the Nelspruit Regional Court for attempting to register fraudulent grants.

Sassa CEO Busisiwe Memela says they are determined to get rid of all culprits in their system.

“We are actually putting in place a process of not just doing security checks but to ensure that we understand as to what lifestyle are our people living so we can see as to where do people get money over and above the money that they get. The teams that they found in Mpumalanga, it was the criminal charge that started first but we need to also make sure that we get people out of the system over and above following the criminal charges.”
