Life Esidimeni hearings resume

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Life Esidimeni Arbitration hearings are expected to resume on Thursday following a six-week adjournment.

Some of those who are expected to testify in the next few days include former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

One hundred and forty three mentally-ill patients died after they were transferred to ill-equipped and unlicensed NGO’s.

That’s after the Gauteng Health Department abruptly terminated its long-standing contract with Life Esidimeni, saying it wanted to cut costs.

Retired Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, who chairs the hearings, hopes proceedings will not drag this time around.

“We’ll have Ms Hannah Jacobus. Certainly we’ll have MEC Qedani Mahlangu, the former MEC, we’ll have the Premier then we’ll have Minister Motsoaledi. At most we hope to have a session of only a week and after that, there’ll be arguments from the various lawyers and I’ll have to go away and go write up an award which will be made public to all of you. But we’re going to try and find the means to have a just and equitable order in these proceedings.”
