Lesufi slams critics of Education Amendment Bill

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says he cannot understand why some people are resisting the Education Amendment Bill which promises equal admissions and opportunities to all scholars.

The Bill relates to the appointment of teachers, the admission of learner admissions and language policies, as well as certain financial decisions.

This could mean the end for single language schools.

Lesufi has warned that those opposed to educational transformation should not test his patience.

“People have issued statements threatening government, threatening state institutions, and saying this is a declaration of war purely because we want all South Africans to get access to quality education.”

Lesufi says, “We want all South Africans to get access to all our schools. If this means people must not be given the opportunity to choose their own language to learn we really think this is unfortunate. And that is why we are urging the Minister to go ahead, publish, finalise these regulations and these changes so that we can have a truly non-racial education system in our country.”
