Leopards drop into relegation zone after AmaZulu draw

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Black Leopards coach Dylan Kerr says his players face a real threat that their round 30 Absa Premiership match against Cape Town City next week could be the last in their careers after failing to beat AmaZulu in Umlazi on Saturday.

Lidoda Duvha were held to a 1-1 draw by Usuthu at the King Zwelithini Stadium. And with other results going against them in their quest to avoid relegation, the Limpopo side slipped to second bottom on the table.

Kerr was massively disappointed that the clubs higher up the table failed to beat some of their drop zone rivals.

For large parts of the game against AmaZulu, Leopards looked like they were on course for the result they so desperately craved.

The league’s top-score Mwape Musonda had given them a 69th minute lead from the penalty spot, and with other results going their way at that stage, survival before the last day looked a real possibility.

But Sibusiso Mabiliso levelled for Usuthu and a few other results changed, leaving Leopards with plenty of work to still do next week. But Kerr nonetheless praised his players for their efforts in Durban.

AmaZulu coach, Cavin Johnson, meanwhile praised his players for the performance they turned in, saying that luck may not have been entirely on their side.

However, he revealed that with the hunger he had seen in the dressing room all week, he always knew his 11th-placed team were going to lose what was their final home match of the season, and also a final one for the retiring legend Siyabonga Nomvethe.

Forty-one-year-old striker Nomvethe bid farewell to KwaZulu-Natal as he appeared off the bench for the final 24 minutes.

The former Bafana Bafana frontman, popularly known as Bhele, was playing his final game after announcing last year that this will be his last season and Johnson challenged the KZN Premier Willies Mchunu afterwards to provide Nomvethe with the honour his illustrious career commanded. Report by Thahir Asmal
