South African swimmer Chad Le Clos is setting his sights on becoming the most decorated Commonwealth athlete of all-time during the games on Australia’s Gold Coast in April 2018.

The current record of 18 medals is being held by sport shooters Mick Gault and Phil Adams.

In only two Commonwealth Games, Le Clos has managed to rack up 12 medals.

He is taking part in the KwaZulu-Natal Aquatics Premier Championships in Durban this week, which is a qualifying event for the Commonwealth Games.

So far, Le Clos has qualified for the 200-metre freestyle, earning gold with a time of 1m 48.28s.

He is hopeful that he will qualify for 7 or 8 events in Australia.

“We’ve done a lot of really hard work. I mean I’ve done 45 k’s this week in the training, you know, leading up to the champs. So like, there’s no rest whatsoever. Usually, we do 15 to 20 k’s leading up to the week. So, almost double that and I’m just very happy with how it’s gone.”
