Land should be given to cooperatives: Jordan

African National Congress (ANC) Stalwart Pallo Jordan has called for the land to be given to cooperatives to collectively work it for food security instead of being given to individual farmers for small scale farming.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape used an event intended to commemorate the life and times of its former Secretary General and late Stalwart of the ANC, Joe Slovo to discuss the issue of land expropriation without compensation.

The event at the University of the Western Cape was addressed by ANC veteran Jordan and Deputy Secretary of the SACP, Jeremy Cronin as well as ANC NEC member Ronald Lamola.

Jordan says taking land away from commercial farmers and redistributing it would be detrimental.

“Because none of the people employed on those farms have demanded that as a form of redress, and then secondly, if you are going to break up a huge business farm it means you are taking tractors, you are taking irrigation systems, you are taking dams and what not… and once you do that, you are not going to be as efficient. So you are putting yourself in a situation where you are not in a position to produce enough food for the country.”
