The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) hearing into the Gauteng leg of the July unrest has rescheduled Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, to testify on Thursday morning.
Lamola will be the fourth cabinet Minister to testify since hearings began in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, more than a week ago.
Police Minister Bheki Cele was the first to appear before the Commission, which is probing the impact and events of the July 2021 unrest that claimed about 350 lives and caused over R50 billion in damages to infrastructure and businesses in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

Forensic data expert Jean Le Roux believes the SAHRC Commission should come up with solutions for the government to avert a similar situation arising in future.
Le Roux says, “I think this Commission and the one from last month I will tell them to go back and look at what went wrong. Find out where those vacuums lie and where it slips through the cracks. Where the fault lies and fix them…”
“I understand there’s a lack of capacity. It’s one thing. I understand how to build that capacity might be a second thing. I would suggest in terms of the next step one should identify where those vacuums lie and find the ways of building up the capacity,” says le Roux.
