The community of Ladysmith , in KwaZulu-Natal(KZN), is still struggling to deal with the death of a nine-year-old child from COVID-19.

A Grade 4 learner at Acaciavale Primary School, Shanika Balsarang, died earlier this month just days after contracting the virus.

“To lose one child is to lose many. We want to take this opportunity as the dept of education to pass over our condolences to the family. No parent raises a child, only for the child to perish before them. We are saddened by what has happened to this learner. We wish her parents a speedy recovery as well,” says KZN Education Department Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi.
