The province achieved a 65.8% pass rate in 2017 with matric results improving by 5% from the 2016 matric results.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in the Eastern Cape has rewarded more than 100 teachers who excelled in 17 different subjects in the matric class of 2017.

The province achieved a 65.8% pass rate in 2017 with matric results improving by 5% from the 2016 matric results.

Sadtu provincial secretary Chris Mdingi says the awards will encourage teachers to excel and produce great results in the province.

However he says they have also invited under-performing teachers to be part of the event and exchange ideas with the performing teachers.

“We have even invited teachers from schools that after viewed to be under performing continuously so as to emulate the good practice from those that have excelled. They would even go to an extent of changing numbers, email addresses and so on so that after this occasion they start interacting with one another and copying those purposes, with one thing in mind that of enabling those to perform well come 2018 and years to follow,” says Mdingi.
