Reading Time: 2 minutes

Reigning L’Ormarins Queens Plate star, Legal Eagle, has defended its title again, winning for the third consecutive year.

The gelding, recently sold by embattled former Steinhoff CEO, Markus Jooste, is the second horse to win the Queen’s Plate three times.

Pocket Power is the only other horse to win for four consecutive years between 2006 and 2010.

The winning horse’s owner will pocket R1.5 million.

Race co-ordinator Katherine Grey says the Plate, now in its 157th year, creates jobs.

“The L’Ormarins Queens Plate just as an event, pure event creates over 1500 jobs. So that’s just the people doing the marques, the staffing all of that. But obviously within the industry, the racing industry, from falling to training to bringing it to the racetrack. There’s massive amounts of jobs that are created through the racing industry itself,” expressed Grey.

The prestigious racing event also drew equestrian and fashion enthusiasts to the Kenilworth Race Course.

Billed as Cape Town’s biggest horse racing event, the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Racing Festival has built up its reputation over the last decade. The event is considered as one of the unmissable social events on Cape Town’s summer calendar.

Off the track, fashionistas, and celebrities, embraced the traditional blue and white theme, with some, admitting that they don’t know too much about racing. Fashion critics have given most outfits the thumbs up.

The event kicked off Cape Town’s social calendar with a bang. The Queens Plate precedes yet another prestigious racing event – The SUN Met – which is due to take place at Kenilworth at the end of the month.
