Koko fights back pending Eskom sacking

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Eskom’s head of generation, Matshela Koko, has approached the Labour Court in Johannesburg to apply for an interdict to stop the power utility from firing him on Friday.

Eskom gave Koko an ultimatum to resign Friday over corruption allegations.  However, Koko has since refused and instead approached the Labour Court.

He earlier told Parliament, during an inquiry into allegations of state capture at the power utility, that he does not have any intention to resign from Eskom.

He was asked the question at the Parliamentary Inquiry following recent reports that he is one of the executives who must be removed by the new board.

Koko read some of the contents of a letter from his lawyer to Eskom.

“If Eskom has designs to terminate our client’s services it has to occur in accordance with the prescripts of the law and affirmed as established in term of the Labour Relations Act pursuant to the  provisions of the constitution through the due process,” read the letter.
