The deciduous fruit industry body, Hortgro has dismissed reports linking the outbreak of Listeria in the country to apples as false and irresponsible.

Executive director, Anton Rabe says a false report is currently circulating on certain WhatsApp groups which refers to an incident dating back to 2015 in California USA when Listeria was found on caramelised apples.

Rabe says to link this to the current situation with the fruit industry, is misleading and sensation-seeking. He says as the industry they are concerned about the Listeria outbreak in this country and will continue to to monitor the situation and engage with health professionals when required.

Rabe says for over a hundred years South Africa has had a excellent reputation as a credible and reliable source of excellent quality and safe fresh fruit.
