Higher Education dept discourages students from walking into universities

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Department of Higher Education is discouraging would-be tertiary students from just walking into universities around the country on Monday in order to register for their studies.

The department is reacting to a call by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) that those wanting to study and could not afford to before must just go and register when universities open. The call follows last month’s announcement of free higher education made by President Jacob Zuma.

The Department’s Acting Deputy Director-General, Diane Parker, says learners wishing to further their studies at institutions of higher learning but did not apply in time, will be assisted through the Central Applications Clearing House.

“Since 2013 we have had in place every year a system, it is called the Central Applications Clearing House, the Cach. It catches anybody whose left out of the net. Students who don’t get a space in the institution they had applied for, get referred through to the Cach. Their information is registered on the system and they could get onto it online, through a toll free telephone number or through an sms. So it’s quite available to everybody. Please come through that and we will try our best to assist you to find an opportunity that’s still available in the post school system.”
