Improved 2017 Matric results – Education Dept

2017 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam results has shown signs of significant improved pass rate, according to the technical briefing in Johannesburg ahead of the official announcement of the performance of the class of 2017.

Whilst Briefing the media in Johannesburg, Basic Education Director General Mathanzima Mweli alluded to the fact that the education in South Africa is improving. This is because provinces, districts and schools have heightened their efforts in implementing different learner support programmes.

With the minister expected to give a pronouncement of the pass rate, the presentation from Mweli gave signs that an improvement is on the cards, with a total of 629 155 Full time NSC enrolments as well as the 173 276 students enrolled for the NSC exam as part time candidates – the director general gave a break down that 44.8% of these candidates were males compared to 55.2% of females.

He also did give insight into the fact that in 2006 a total of 1 294 975 were in grade 1 and only 629 155 were retained in the schooling system writing the 2017 NSC exam.

Mweli added that the number of schools across the country that achieved a zero percent matric pass rate in 2017 has halved from 18 schools to nine. He also says there was, however, a drop in the number of schools that achieved a 100 percent pass rate.
