KZN to host colloquium on GBV

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) government is expected to host a two-day colloquium on gender-based violence (GBV).

The colloquium is expected to start on Thursday.

In the latest reported GBV incident in the province, a woman and her 15-year-old daughter were killed in their home at Umzumbe on the south coast.

The seminar, which will be hosted by the Department of Social Development in partnership with the Durban University of Technology, seeks to understand what drives men to abuse and kill women.

Social Development Spokesperson, Mhlabunzima Memela says the department is hoping to develop a strategy on how to deal with GBV.

“We have been trying, as government, to lead the campaign and the civil society encouraging people and also urging men to stop killing our mothers, our sisters, but we continue to see these incidents increasing –  hence these academics, as well as the experts and the leaders of government, will be then meeting in Durban. We’re then hoping that the outcome will then assist us to develop the strategy on how to deal with these issues,” says Memela.
