The KwaZulu Natal Sports and Recreation Department has honoured sports men and women who have excelled in their respective fields.

The winners were given their awards at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in Durban.

The categories ranged from “development at school level” to “provincial teams participating in the PSL”.

Female rugby player Zinhle Ndawonde, scooped the “Sports personality of the year” Award.

Ndawonde said, “It really means a lot – I didn’t expect it, because there’s some athletes that were there are really good athletes, and I was competing against the best; with God’s glory everything happened. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me, and everyone who supported me.”

Henri Schoeman a Triathlonist waltzed off with the “Sportsman of the year” Award, while Bongiwe Msomi, who is a netball player, took the “Sportswoman of the Year” award.

Msomi said, “I’m actually shocked, I didn’t expect it but I did work into my netball career, sometimes I just feel like I’m being rewarded for all the hard work that I have put in, to be honest all the nominees are amazing.”

“People don’t really know what we do and what we go through behind the scenes, especially as sports women, to try and stay as fit as we can and to perform at our best and to be elite athlete and therefore to be a nominee alone means so much,” added Msomi.
