KwaZulu-Natal police have recovered explosives at an abandoned house in the Bruntville area in Mooi River. Acting on intelligence received, the Police’s K-9 unit from Pietermaritzburg made the discovery on Saturday morning.
National Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says the explosives have been confirmed to be Viper boosters – which are generally used in mining.
Naidoo says this is not the first time this type of explosive has been recovered.
“Although not confirmed yet, it is suspected that these explosives may have been intended for Automated Teller Machine (ATM) bombings and/or Cash-in-Transit (CIT) heists as similar explosives are known to have been used for this purpose before. These types of explosives have been recovered previously as well. No arrests have yet been made with regards to explosives recovered today and we are appealing to anyone who has any information to please contact the SAPS on 086 00 10111.”
