KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will on Monday visit the family of 42-year-old Sergeant Busisiswe Mjwara who died during search and recovery operations for flood victims in Pietermaritzburg.
Mjwara was part of search operations in the Msunduzi River when she got into difficulty and drowned.
During the same operation, K9 Leah from the Durban Central Search and Rescue unit also drowned.
Leah was attempting to assist Sergeant Mjwara when she also experienced difficulties.
“The National Commissioner takes this opportunity to thank the deceased members for their service to the nation. He says these members died heroines putting their country first. His heartfelt condolences also goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of the two members and canine Leah and those members who have lost their loved ones. A speedy recovery to those who have been injured as well as those who have lost their homes and belongings,” says police spokesperson Colonel Athlende Mathe.
