KZN mother appeals for help to find kidnapped newborn baby

Reading Time: 3 minutes

A Jozini mother in northern KwaZulu-Natal whose newborn baby was taken from her last week is appealing for help to find him.

Phumzile Gina from eMamfene area in Jozini says she is overwhelmed and wracked with worry with her son still missing.

It is believed that just a day after being discharged from hospital, Gina was on her way home when she met with an unknown female at a bus station.

The woman offered to help her carry the baby and soon disappeared with the newborn.

There is a somber mood at the Gina homestead. Days later there are still no answers around their missing child.

Thirty-five-year-old Gina says she believes that the woman who took her baby first saw them at the hospital.

She recalls the sequence of events after she was discharged, saying that the woman got on the same bus as her and offered to help her hold the child when the bus stopped at a station.

After a visit to the toilet, she came back to find both the woman and her newborn baby boy were gone.

“She offered to hold my son. I went to a nearby toilet leaving my son with her. I went out and found her waiting for me, so I decided to eat, the next moment she had vanished with my son. I asked people who were around, they told me she was picked by a car.”

Tears

Fighting back the tears, Gina is appealing to anyone with any information to contact the police.

“I appeal to anyone seeing a woman carrying a newborn baby boy to report that person if she was never pregnant. I just want my son back, I have other kids, I am raising them, I’ve never abandoned them although I am poor but I love my kids. Whoever took my child please return my child, my breasts are painful, I can’t even sleep at night.”

KwaZulu-Natal Police Spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says, “When they got off at Mamlambo bus station, the woman disappeared with the baby whilst the mother was eating her meal. When she made inquiries in the vicinity, she was told that a silver-grey motor vehicle picked up the woman with the baby and drove away.  Anyone with information that can assist police to find the baby is requested to contact the investigating officer Sergeant Hadebe on 079 902 6088 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”

The devastated Gina family has pinned their hopes on the police investigation to bring the newest addition to their family, home.
