The KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance Department say their disaster management teams are on high alert after warnings that the province will experience heavy rains.

Strong winds and hailstorms are expected to hit areas in the coastal, central and northern parts of the province.

The inclement weather has claimed three lives in the province, including a pregnant woman, her three-year old child and a 33 year-old man.

MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube says, “We wish to send our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and all relatives following the incident in KwaMashu L section, where a retaining wall collapsed following these rain falls. It left three people deceased but also to say that please our communities we need to be on the lookout, send the alert to communities, please avoid crossing the river stream when there are heavy rains. If you can postpone your trip, please postpone your trip because these rains can really lead to flooding. There will continue to be heavy rains and strong winds.”
