KwaZulu-Natal residents pray for their province

Reading Time: 2 minutes

KwaZulu-Natal residents have been urged to heal the wounds of the past in order to move forward. The plea was made during an interfaith prayer day in the Durban City Hall.

The prayer was aimed at seeking divine intervention for the social ills gripping the province. eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede says during service delivery pickets some people still use violence, and damage government infrastructure – a clear indication that people are still stuck in the past.

She also condemned the recent attack on a mosque in Verulam, north of Durban.

“We are coming from apartheid regime people are still stuck in how if you want to achieve something you use the similar method, they do not realise that we are now in government, we need to protect one another we need to protect our development we need to protect everything that we have. Freedom of religion within South Africa, constitution stipulate that clearly that everyone is free to have his or her own religion and also we need to protect our women and children, they cannot protect themselves so killing of a youngster I do not think is a correct thing.”

Mazwe Mweli and Nombeko Khumalo, who attended the prayer, believe that this event will help to shape the future of the province. They also called on stakeholders to come together in the spirit of uBuntu.

“This prayer is exactly what we needed in KwaZulu-Natal as we have heard many incidents, women are being killed, children are being raped, there is this power drug which is called woonga which is affecting the youth, destroying our future. Where will the future of this country be if the youth is busy using drugs,” said Mweli.

“We asking church leaders, political leaders, stakeholders, we need to come together and speak with one voice and we are saying today enough is enough. Now we need to bring back what we call ubuntu,” said Khumalo.
