Kotane reburied at home

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The remains of struggle stalwart Moses Kotane have been buried in his home town of Pella in North West.

The reburial of the South African Communist Party (SACP’s) longest serving secretary general was concluded with by erecting a tomb stone at his grave.

Kotane died in Russia in 1978 and his remains were repatriated last week.

President Jacob Zuma earlier told mourners Kotane gave his life to the struggle for freedom. Zuma says the hard work and commitment of Kotane should be an example for the youth of South Africa.

Today comrade Moses Kotane has finally come home to his permanent resting place.

“It is important to note here that Tathe Kotane was a hard worker which earned him the positions of leadership. Through him we want to inspire our youth, in particular, to read, work hard and rise through the leadership of organisations, through the ranks, through commitment, dedication and hard work.”

He says South Africans are honoured to have the opportunity to bid him farewell.

“Today comrade Moses Kotane has finally come home to his permanent resting place. Tathe Moses Kotane gave his whole life to the struggle for freedom, justice and equality. We are honoured to have the opportunity to bid him a formal farewell. We are privileged indeed to call this internationalist our compatriot.”

A monument in honour of Moses Kotane was unveiled.
