Women in Kokstad in the south of KwaZulu-Natal say they fear for their safety and that of their children following the discovery of a body underneath a car in the Shayamoya township last weekend.

People believe it’s the body of a woman who has been reported missing in August.

Previously, two seven-year-old children went missing in separate incidents and their bodies were later found.

A mother of four daughters, who wanted to remain anonymous, says she prays for the girls’ safety every time they go to school.

“It is so frustrating as I am a mother of four girls, so it very frustrating and I am living with the young one so when she goes to school. I am worried if my child will come back safe or not. We do trust in God that he will protect our children. We only trust God. When it comes to our police, I myself have lost hope in our police system.”

Meanwhile, chairperson of the local youth crime prevention desk, Kamvalethu Cetywayo says young people have taken it upon themselves to deal with the murder of women by forming local community structures to detect illegal activities.

“As the youth desk, we have taken up that we must form community structures and we believe that by forming safety structure, this is the safest way to curb crime in Kokstad as they involve the community so that they can identify whoever comes to the community. Remember, as such as we don’t know the person who did this, so having a community that is vigilant in their respective areas will assist us a lot to conduct investigations.”
