India's Virat Kohli celebrates after running out England's Joe Root.

England captain Joe Root took Virat Kohli‘s “mic drop” gesture in good spirit and said the India skipper’s mocking imitation of him had added to the spectacle of test cricket.

England were cruising at 216 for the loss of three wickets on the opening day of the first test on Wednesday when an ill-judged call by Jonny Bairstow led to Root being run out on 80 following a brilliant throw by Kohli.

Kohli celebrated the dismissal with a “mic drop” gesture, pretending to drop an imaginary microphone, just as Root had done a month earlier when he clinched the one-day international series with a second successive hundred.

“I actually think it adds to the whole spectacle of test cricket, it gives a bit of humour to it, and it makes for a very entertaining series for something like that to happen so early on, so we’ll see how things pan out over the course of the five test matches,” Root told Sky before the second day’s play.

England were all out in their first innings for 287 early on Thursday.

Root’s side won the one-day international series between the teams 2-1 and lost the Twenty20 competition by the same margin earlier this month.
