Zulu Monarch, King Goodwill Zwelithini lambasted those he called savages of the environment. The King was speaking at a tree planting ceremony in Nongoma. The event was linked to the annual reed dance. The dance is a symbol of purity. At least 30 000 maidens presented their reeds to the King. This year the event incorporated environmental concerns. For every reed laid, a tree was planted. This was in anticipation of the COP17 climate change meeting taking place in the province later this year.

“People must find alternative ways to hunt and I urge them to live environmentally friendly lifestyles,” said King Zwelithini President Jacob Zuma praised the King for the initiative and reiterated government’s committment to combatting the effects of climate change.
