Kimberley artists call for recognition

Kimberley artists say they are tired of always being opening and supporting acts at prominent shows. They have now organised a free concert and artist market at Galeshewe outside the City.

The artists are trying to create awareness about their artistry and hope that they will be taken serious by show promoters and sponsors.

“There are talents but our talents are not being recognised. But as small businesses, we thought let’s look into the development of raw talent,” says Market Organiser, Frederick Makoko.

The artists say although they face challenges in getting their work recognised, craft markets like these help them to turn their passion into profit: “These exhibitions are very helpful to any entrepreneur and I would encourage people to participate in it.”

“The Northern Cape is a very vast area in terms of travelling to other places. You have to travel back and forth in one day and it’s very much costly that way, so funding is one of the challenges.”
