Parliament’s Select Committee on Petitions says staff shortages linked to a high number of disciplinary hearings and the firing of senior staff members, are hampering service delivery at the Khayelitsha District Hospital on the Cape Flats.

The committee says it witnessed a number of patients lying on the floor during a recent visit to the facility.

Committee Chairperson, Dumisani Ximbi says: “Head nurses in various departments complained of the pressure faced by staff on a daily basis…”

He said, the hospital is also said to face a severe shortage of beds as patients are assisted according to the severity of their illness.

Ximbi also instructed management to provide the committee with a comprehensive report on ongoing disciplinary hearings, the firing of staff, and various challenges facing the hospital.
