South African Kevin Anderson has beaten American Ryan Harrison in the US Open in five sets.

Another South African, Lloyd Harris, who played in his first ever Grand Slam, was beaten by Frenchman Gilles Simon.

Top seed, Simona Halep suffered the biggest upset on day one of the US Open. She was beaten in straight sets by Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.

After his over four hour match, Anderson said he always knew it was going to be a tough draw.

“I’ve played Ryan a few times, and I know he’s a great competitor. I knew I was going to have my work cut out for me, and it just shows you, you hear a lot of people projecting draws and there are so many great players. I have a lot of respect for Ryan, he played great; it just wasn’t his day.  It was incredibly tough conditions tonight. It was so hot and humid, you’re losing so much fluid; it’s really tough,” said Anderson.
