Kenyatta launches nationwide recruitment drive for his party

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has launched a nationwide recruitment drive for his party ahead of the country’s August general elections.

The membership drive coincides with the country’s mass voter registration, which kicks off on Monday.

The catch? Those who want to be members of the Jubilee Party must be registered voters.

This is likely to raise the stakes as both the opposition and the ruling party are looking to get as many of their supporters to register to vote.

With just over 200 days to Kenya’s General elections, each side is at work to woo supporters.

On Friday, President Kenyatta’s newly-launched Jubilee Party started the process of recruiting members.

President Kenyatta is seeking his second and final term.

Unlike the first term, this time he faces a united opposition, keen to stop that bid. He, however, says that he is confident that he can still beat them, outlining some of his achievements during this first term.

Former political rivals, Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto vied for the presidency and won in 2013.

At the time, they faced crimes against humanity charges at the International Criminal Court for their alleged role in the 2007 Post Election violence, which left 1200 people dead.

What was then seen as a political marriage of convenience is now a political party ready to take on the opposition.
