Kenya holds memorial for Madikizela-Mandela

An umbrella body for women organisations in Kenya held a memorial service for the late South African icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in Nairobi on Friday.

Among those who attended the service was South African High Commissioner to Kenya, Koleka Mqulwana.

Speakers at the service paid tribute to Mama Madikizela- Mandela eulogising her for her struggles against the apartheid regime.

At the Nairobi Baptist church, women leaders and members of the country’s women’s movement the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation gathered to pay tribute to Mama Winnie.

Those who have interacted with her described her as fearless, resilient and an inspiration to the struggle for the liberation of women.

She was last in Kenya 10 years ago.

Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga is among dignitaries expected at Mama Winnie’s funeral in Johannesburg on Saturday.
