Kenya is targeting 10 gold medals up from six at the 2008 Beijing games. Among the country’s medal hopefuls are Vivian Cheruyoit and Ezekiel Kemboi. Athletics action gets underway on Friday. In Kenya, all eyes will be on 28 year old Cheruiyot. The World Champion is on a quest for two Gold medals in the 5 and 10,000 meter races. Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba won Gold in both events in Beijing. Cheruyoit emulated her at last year’s world championships in South Korea and she finished first in the recent Nairobi trials. “London is going to be tough because we are going to compete with the rest of the world, especially those people from Ethiopia. But that cannot make us not win,” says Cheruyoit. Dibaba, her main challenger, will also be in London. However, Cheruiyot is confident of a Kenyan podium finish. Kenya is also eyeing its seventh Olympic 3 000m steeplechase gold medal, pinning its hopes on Ezekiel Kemboi. The country has dominated the race during major championships and is confident of sweeping the medals’ board.
