Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, aged 93 like President Robert Mugabe, has arrived in Harare to try to convince his old liberation colleague to step down.

It’s believed Kaunda has been flown into the capital to convince the embattled leader to relinquish power.

Mugabe missed the deadline to render his resignation by midday on Monday.

Kaunda’s is President Mugabe’s long term friend and comrade Kaunda is regarded as a credible leader who’d be able intervene in Zimbabwe’s political impasse.

The relationship between the two statesmen dates back to the time the frontline states of Southern Africa fought for liberation.

Kaunda’s arrival has brought some hope that there will be a breakthrough in negotiations between Mugabe and the Defence Force who are leading the call for the 93-year- old to leave office.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s military chief, General Constantino Chiwenga, has confirmed that axed Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is in Zimbabwe and is also holding talks with Mugabe.

He has also urged other political players including members of the ruling Zanu-PF, the veterans of the liberation struggle, opposition groups, students and people in general to refrain from any action or activity that would threaten peace, life and property.

He also say students at the country’s various institutions, should proceed with their educational programmes as scheduled.
