Five people have been arrested for public violence in Westbury, Johannesburg. The situation remains tense following another day of community protests over crime and drugs.

Earlier, a police Nyala was hit with a petrol bomb during a stand-off between residents and the police.

This was after police had fired rubber bullets as they tried to move the protesters away the Main Road.

Westbury residents have been engaged in running battles with the police for the most part of Monday morning. Those clashes have stopped for now and some community members are meeting to decide on a way forward.

A few people have been injured, but the exact number is not yet clear.

The protests have also spilled over to nearby Claremont, Newclare and Bosmont areas, but the situation is calm.

However, streets in and out of the areas remain barricaded with rocks.
