The Justice and Correctional Services Minister, Michael Masutha has ordered his department to institute a thorough investigation into a shooting incident at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Two people were killed in the incident.

It is believed that a man and a woman were attending a divorce hearing when a suspect shot them inside a courtroom. The suspect, who is believed to be a policeman, then turned the gun on himself.

Department Spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga says Minister Masutha will work with Police Minister Bheki Cele in improving security at courthouses around the country.

Masutha has condemned the shooting incident at the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

He has also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased.

“I would like to reassure the public that our courts are safe. The Magistrate’s Court tomorrow will work as usual.”
