The Polokwane High Court in Limpopo will on Monday hand down judgment in the compensation court case around six-year-old learner Michael Komape, who drowned after falling into a school pit latrine.

The incident happened at Mahlodumela Primary School in Chebeng village outside Polokwane in 2014.

His family is suing the State for more than R3 million with the help of Section 27. The rights organisation’s Tebogo Sephakgamela, says they are hoping for a favourable outcome.

“It will mean that every learner in Limpopo will know that they have rights to sanitation, proper sanitation, and then again to send a strong message to the officials in the department, they should know that they are there to serve us.”
