JSC interviews candidates nominated for positions at superior courts

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Judicial Service Commission has begun interviewing candidates, nominated for positions at superior courts. There are two vacancies in the Constitutional Court and other positions available at various high court divisions.

Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo, is presiding over the session in Sandton, Johannesburg.

“The Commission had a very fruitful and constructive discussion yesterday (Monday) on its mandate. Part of what we discussed was the selection criteria that had been decided by this Commission in 2010. We reaffirmed that they continue to apply it.”

The interviews are streamed on the SABC News YouTube channel:

Research and Advocacy Officer at Judicial watchdog group, Judges Matter, Mbekezeli Benjamin says the two candidates for the Constitutional Court positions will be selected from the five names the JSC sent.

“It is difficult to predict how the interviews will go but we can sort of predict what the ultimate outcome will be. Because the Constitution requires the JSC to send at least five names while there are two vacancies at the ConCourt and right now, we only have five candidates. So, that means the JSC has no choice but to send those names to the President to decide which two of the five he will appoint to the ConCourt.”

Benjamin says those appointed must be appropriately qualified.

In the video below, he adds that they must have skills required for the positions:
