Joint committee to address illegal immigration

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A joint committee is to be established to address illegal immigration within Johannesburg.

Mayor Herman Mashaba and Home Affairs Minister Ayanda Dlodlo are to meet to agree on the terms of reference for the joint committee and time frames for completion of its work.

Luyanda Mfeka, from Mayor Mashaba’s office, says a plan is needed to address the rising illegal immigration challenges facing the City of Johannesburg:

“We require that where persons are detected as undocumented immigrants, for whatever reasons they find themselves in the country, that Home Affairs processes those people and makes a determination on their status. That allows them to appropriately plan for providing services to those people in those communities and that is the primary outcome we’re looking for.”
