Johannesburg residents have been asked to continue reducing water consumption.
By early Thursday evening, some reservoirs and towers were at low or critical levels.
Johannesburg Water said those in the Soweto and the Roodepoort areas are stable but low.
Fourteen others including Hursthill, Crown Gardens and Naturena are at a critical level.
It is not yet clear when the water supply will be fully restored.
#JoburgWaterUpdate: reservoirs are currently building up capacity after the 54 maintenance project, during this time you may experience low water pressure to no water.

Water crisis
On Tuesday, water expert, Professor Anthony Turton warned that South Africa’s water crisis could be as bad as the rolling blackout problem – if not worse.
Turton said while Rand Water is a world-class operation, something has to be done with the water problems for the sake of the economy.
“They’re both of an equal magnitude in a way. The difference being that the power outage problem can be resolved, we can still build power stations, but we can’t really extend our water network much more.”
Turton said South Africa needs to create ‘new water’ in order to grow the economy.
