Johannesburg’s City Power is to lay criminal charges including against some of its sub-contractors for allegedly stealing R80 million worth of infrastructure.
These include street pole, circuit breakers, transformers‚ overhead lines and rolls of copper cable. A number of suspects have been arrested following raids conducted on 12 properties across Johannesburg.
Johannesburg MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Nico de Jager says, “We need to have controls and we need to understand that when contractors come to take something that they are actually doing the work. So, the follow-up on our side needs to intensify by a tenfold.”
