African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng Chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, insists that the government of local unity in the City of Johannesburg remains intact although the mayor has resigned.

Al Jama-ah councillor Thapelo Amad resigned on Monday ahead of a motion of no confidence in him which was scheduled to take place the following day.

Addressing the media on behalf of the political parties in the ANC/EFF alliance, Lesufi says, “The government of local unity accepted the resignation letter of our executive mayor, and we defend motions against the speaker and the chief whip. We want to take this opportunity to thank councillor Thapelo Amad for agreeing to represent the collective as the executive. In the next few days, the government of local unity will meet to submit a new name, as our candidate for the position of executive mayor.”

Successful stint

Meanwhile, Al Jama-ah leader, Ganief Hendricks, says they believe Amad had a successful stint leading the city, and they hope the coalition parties will again choose someone from Al Jama-ah to be mayor of Johannesburg.

“We hope that the collective will appoint someone from Al-Jama ah to continue leading but this is a democratic process. The other group who is irrelevant, the DA and ActionSA, will put up a candidate and that candidate will be defeated. And we hope that Al-Jama ah will continue, we governed for under 90 days and we want to govern a full term.”
