Joburg City threatens to attach ANC property

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The city of Johannesburg says if the African National Congress fails to pay over R300 000 in legal fees owed to the city by Friday, property at its headquarters will be attached.

This comes after the ANC brought an urgent court application last year to table a motion of no confidence against Joburg mayor, Herman Mashaba.

The court then found that the ANC’s motion lacked the urgency and the matter was struck off the roll. The city says ANC did not place before the court as to why the application was urgent. The City’s Tony Tarvena-Turisan says they will take action.

“Last week the city of Johannesburg obtained a written execution against the ANC for failure to pay owe R300 000 in legal fees owed to the city and its residents. Should the ANC fail to make payment by this friday the 15th of June the city has instructed its lawyers to proceed with the execution with the court order. The court went as far as order this cost against the ANC which in essence the ANC has to pay to the cost incurred by the city of Johannesburg as a result of this urgent application.”
