Joburg Ballet is finishing off the season with their variation of The Nutcracker which will be hosted by the South African State Theatre, Pretoria, from November 22 – December 1.

Based on the traditional classic created more than a century ago, it has been reworked by Joburg Ballet’s artistic director Iain MacDonald and ballet mistresses Angela Malan and Lauren Dixon-Seager.

The musical score is by the great composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In 1891, world renowned choreographer, Marius Petipa commissioned Tchaikovsky to compose the music for Alexandre Dumas’s adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman’s tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

The Nutcraker was first danced in 1892

In a highlight for the Joburg Ballet production, Mexican-based ballet star Jonhal Fernández is making a guest appearance to partner with prima ballerina Burnise Silvius.

Other partnerships to look forward to are Shannon Glover and Ramiro Sámon; Lindé Wessels and Jonathan Rodrigues; Angela Maree and Javier Monier; Shannon Glover and Michael Revie; and Angela Maree and Michael Revie.
