Gauteng’s JDR Stars are the 2018/2019 National ABC Motsepe Champions after they beat Steenberg United 1-0 in the final of the National Playoffs at Erica Park on Saturday.

Sello Letooane scored the only goal, late in the game, to give Nnditsheni Nemasisi’s team the victory and the R1 million first prize. Steenberg, who along with JDR have been promoted to the National First Division, received R500 000.

Nemasisi says he is pleased with the win and that after losing to Steenberg in the opening game of the tournament, they were determined to not have it happen again.

Nemasisi has been with the team from its inception and he says promoting the team to the professional ranks means a great deal to him.

JDR Stars midfielder Makhanya Moeketsi was named player of the tournament, and he says he is grateful to his teammates and proud to win player of the tournament.

While they may have lost the final, Steenberg Coach Mike Lukhubeni says he is incredibly proud of his young team on getting promotion. Lukhubeni had to watch two of the games from the stand, after being sent off in the first game but always believed in his team.

This was Steenberg’s third time at the playoffs in four years, and Lukhubeni says that perhaps previous times were not meant to be, but this was their time. – Report by Rob Delport
