Residents of Jacobsdal in Free State are counting their losses after their houses were destroyed by a violent storm. Houses and shacks were damaged on Christmas day.

Residents were forced to leave their houses when the roofs were blown off by strong winds. Free State Head of Disaster Management Markes Butler says many parts of the area remain flooded.

“We found couple houses that roofs were blown off about two houses and one house that the tree partially fell on and the roof is still intact, and those people are trying to cut the tree. And in the informal settlement, we found a lot of informal dwelling that was flooded due to the fact that these people are residing in the flood line. So, there’s no stormwater drainage system there’s no drain system. So, it becomes a river after they have received severe water from downpours,” says Butler.
