Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Thandi Moraka says one of the biggest reasons the province is unable to retain talent at home is because sports is not taken seriously.
Limpopo has been producing some of the best athletes in different sporting codes for the country; however the talent most of the time hardly ply their trade at home.
Moraka believes the problem can be solved by starting with better funding.
The MEC is however disappointed that residents do not take capacity-building programmes to heart.
Moraka was referring to the coaching courses in different codes funded by the department.
Moraka says this has left the department with egg on their face, adding that they will re-look the way in which they select potential coaches.
With the launch and start of the Softball Premier League, Moraka reveals the government has plans to build a world class softball facility in the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex.
The MEC says there is a budget of R60 million for this facility and she hopes to see only Limpopo residents benefit from it.
Last week the MEC honoured Miss Mmetja Mofomme, the number one supporter of netball in the province.
Mofomme was honoured with provincial colours at the launch and farewell event for the provincial team – the Baobabs – for the Telkom Netball League.
