A high level investigation has begun into the head-on crash between two light motor vehicles on the N2 at Mtunzini in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Four people died on impact whilst one died at hospital. One of the motor vehicles ignited on impact.
KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Rescue Services spokesperson, Robert McKenzie says its not known at this stage whether the victims had been travelling to Durban from eSwatini formerly known as Swaziland.
McKenzie has warned motorists to drive carefully on this stretch of road, especially during inclement weather.
He says police have started their investigation which includes locating and identifying family members.
He says: “We do know that this section of road is rather notorious for severe crashes. So we would like to remind motorists when travelling on that section, especially if it is raining, to please be very careful.”
