Interpol issues red notices for Guptas and associates

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued red notices against Atul and Rajesh Gupta, their wives and associates. This means they can be arrested in any country that is a member of Interpol.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Investigative Directorate Spokesperson, Sindisiwe Seboka, says this means arrest warrants have been issued in part by Interpol.

She says if the Guptas appear in any of the countries where Interpol has a footprint, they would be arrested and then held there. Once they have been held, South Africa will be notified and can then send an application for extradition.

“Once we’ve done that, then the ball will begin in earnest in that particular country. Because what we’re essentially saying is even though we have started the process of extradition for the UAE ( United Arab Emirates) as well as India for the accused – Atul Gupta, Rajesh Gupta as well as their wives and several other business associates, we’re not blind to the fact that they could be in other parts of the world,” says Seboka.

Seboka says they have communicated with Interpol and brought their application.
