Just ahead of Census 2011, Statistics South Africa released the 2011 mid-year population estimates report on July 27, 2011. Stats SA said the country’s population has passed the 50 million mark. The mid-year population estimates come as the statistical agency prepares to conduct a census in (73 days) from 27 July.

The estimates, which cover all residents in the country, put the population at 50.59-million people. When taking into account the South African birth rate, plus immigration, minus emigration and death rate, the population growth rate was 1.1%.

The mid-year population estimates are based on the 2001 census and use cohort component methodology to estimate. Gauteng is the most populated province in the country, according to the latest figures, which show that 22.4% of residents live in Gauteng. KwaZulu-Natal is the second most populated province, while the Northern Cape is the least populated province. The estimates show that 52% of the population is constituted of women. The estimates also touch on internal migration trends. Life expectancy at birth for 2011 is estimated at 54.9 years for males and 59.1 years for females.

The infant mortality rate is estimated at 37.9 deaths of infants under the age of 1 per 1000 live births in a given year. The estimated overall HIV prevalence rate is approximately 10.6%.

The population growth rate was 1.1%
